Benin and Mali eliminate trachoma as a public health problem
Benin and Mali have achieved a significant milestone by receiving validation from the World Health Organization for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem, making them the fifth and sixth countries in the WHO African Region to achieve this. Trachoma, the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide, disproportionately affects children. Over the years, ESPEN has played a crucial role in supporting countries in their efforts against trachoma, including providing technical assistance to countries to ensure they can reach the threshold of disease elimination. Through the WHO-recommended SAFE strategy, which includes surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness, and environmental improvement, countries like Benin and Mali have made significant progress in eliminating trachoma. This accomplishment underscores the ongoing commitment and action towards eliminating neglected tropical diseases.
