The ESPEN Reference Laboratory provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic and technical services to support national NTD programmes across the African Region. Its core diagnostic capacity covers both molecular and serological testing, including Ov16 ELISA for detecting human exposure to Onchocerca volvulus and O-150 PCR for detecting parasite DNA in blackflies. These validated assays provide critical evidence for monitoring transmission and verifying elimination progress.

In addition to laboratory testing, the facility offers guidance on survey design, sample collection, and field implementation of entomological and epidemiological assessments. It supports countries in planning and executing pre-stop and stop-MDA evaluations, ensuring data are reliable and consistent with WHO standards.

The laboratory also houses a regional Diagnostic Hub that manages the procurement, storage, and distribution of diagnostic kits and reagents used in national surveys. With upgraded cold-chain facilities and stock management systems, it ensures timely dispatch of supplies to country programmes. Through these combined capabilities, the ESPEN Reference Laboratory acts as a regional backbone for diagnostic services, technical support, and standardized data generation essential for NTD elimination verification.
