Through innovative initiatives, WHO significantly contributes to controlling and eliminating NTDs across the continent.

Dr Basiliana's journey exemplifies the transformative impact of WHO’s Mwele Malecela Mentorship (MMM) Programme for Women in Neglected Tropical Diseases. As a mentee of the programme, she experienced substantial personal and professional growth under the mentorship of Ms. Lisa Rotondo, a global health expert. Dr Basiliana has gained valuable insights, skills, and confidence, enabling her to navigate challenges and seize opportunities with resilience, focus, and determination

The support provided by the MMM Programme enables mentees to participate in significant events such as the WHO AFRO Annual NTD Program Managers meeting, the 73rd Session WHO Regional Committee for Africa, the Neglected Tropical Disease Nongovernmental Organization Network (NNN) Conference, and the ASTMH Annual Meeting. These opportunities strategically position mentees on the path to leadership within the field. By empowering women to take on leadership roles, both the MMM Programme and WHO contribute to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and innovation in combating NTDs and ultimately ending diseases in Africa.
