Strengthening Laboratory Capacities: ESPEN Hosts Advanced Training in Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis Testing

14 Dec 2023

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – In a significant step towards enhancing the capabilities of national laboratories in combating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), the Expanded Special Project for Elimination of NTDs (ESPEN) recently conducted an advanced training program at its laboratory in Ouagadougou. Held from November 30 to December 07, 2023, the training program was a convergence of expertise and commitment, drawing participants from Niger and Chad, two nations at the forefront of the fight against Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis.

A Refreshing Training for a Vital Cause

The training welcomed Dr. Salissou Adamou, coordinator of the Onchocerciasis / Lymphatic Filariasis Program in Niger, and Adoum Mahamat Oumar from the Onchocerciasis Program in Chad. Their participation was graciously sponsored by The END Funds through the Reaching The Last Mile initiative, underscoring the collaborative efforts in tackling NTDs. The primary aim of this week-long program was to provide an updated understanding of good laboratory practices and the latest Pool Screening protocols for O-150 PCR, a critical technique in identifying the presence of Onchocerciasis.

Hands-on Experience with Real Samples

A unique aspect of this training was the practical testing of black flies’ samples to determine their infectivity rates – a crucial parameter in understanding and controlling the spread of Onchocerciasis. Trainees engaged with samples from Nige and Chad, examining a significant number of specimens (6,104 samples from Moly Haoussa and 6,004 from Albamani in Niger; 5,917 samples from Oulibangala and 1,218 from Katia in Chad). This hands-on experience not only provided practical skills but also contributed valuable data to the ongoing research in these regions.

Empowering National Capacities

The training was more than just a skill enhancement exercise; it was a step towards empowering the national laboratories in Niger and Chad. The trainees expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the training's role in building their capacities to better tackle NTDs in their respective countries.

Looking Ahead

As ESPEN continues its mission to eliminate NTDs across the African region, such training programs are vital in equipping local experts with the necessary skills and knowledge. The effective completion of the Ouagadougou training session stands as a clear indication of ESPEN's dedication to developing a strong network of proficient experts, ready to spearhead the battle against NTDs within their nations and internationally.
