Marking World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day: Unite. Act. Eliminate.

30 Jan 2024

On this World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day, ESPEN proudly joins the global community in highlighting the theme "Unite. Act. Eliminate." as we commemorate the progress made and the challenges faced in the fight against NTDs. With a renewed commitment to prioritizing NTDs in Universal Health Coverage, addressing the intersection between NTDs and climate change, and bolstering global health security, ESPEN remains dedicated to achieving a world free from the burden of neglected tropical diseases.

1. NTDs and Universal Health Coverage / Health System Strengthening: Prioritizing NTDs in Universal Health Coverage ensures a comprehensive healthcare approach that includes everyone. ESPEN is dedicated to strengthening health systems against neglected tropical diseases to ensure that no one is left behind in our pursuit of health for all.

2. NTDs and Climate Change: NTDs are particularly sensitive to shifting global climate patterns. ESPEN recognizes the urgency of adapting public health strategies to address the exacerbating effect of climate change on NTDs. Our commitment extends to adapting strategies to keep pace with our changing environment.

3. NTDs - '50 down, 50 to go': The end of NTDs is within reach. ESPEN celebrates the remarkable milestone of 50 countries eliminating at least one NTD 19 of which are from the WHO African Region, marking a halfway milestone towards the 100-country target set for 2030 in the WHO road map for neglected tropical diseases. ESPEN remains steadfast in our commitment to support more countries to eliminate NTDs.

4. NTDs and Global Health Security: NTDs are a critical component of global health security. Safeguarding against NTDs not only protects individual communities but contributes to the overall security of global populations. ESPEN recognizes the interconnectedness of health security and is committed to playing our part in securing a healthier future for all.

5. NTDs and Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response (PPPR): Amid health crises, maintaining essential health services, including NTD services, is paramount. ESPEN highlights the integral role of NTD initiatives in PPPR, emphasizing the interconnectedness of global health efforts. This proactive approach addresses potential outbreaks before they escalate into global crises, safeguarding vulnerable populations.

6. NTDs and Equity: NTD elimination drives broader social and economic equity, empowering communities through improved health. ESPEN acknowledges the importance of prioritizing the most marginalized by focusing NTD resources and programmes on those who bear the greatest burden, taking significant steps towards equity in global health.
