In Memory of Dr. Azodoga Sékétéli: A Giant in Onchocerciasis Control

It is with a heavy heart that the world of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) learned about the passing of Dr. Azodoga Sékétéli on 3 September 2024. As Director of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) from 1999 to 2005, Dr. Sékétéli was one of the giants in the fight against river blindness (onchocerciasis) in Africa. His unwavering commitment to launching onchocerciasis control efforts in the most remote and conflict-affected regions laid a strong foundation for the ongoing NTD control initiatives across the continent.. He played a pivotal role in the elimination of the onchocerciasis vector on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.Dr. Sékétéli was a tireless advocate for inclusive strategies, ensuring onchocerciasis elimination efforts reached all affected communities. His work in developing key scientific tools and his numerous peer-reviewed publications reshaped the landscape of NTD control and contributed significantly to the strides made toward eliminating river blindness. His leadership was marked by fairness, vision, and a strong commitment to uplifting underserved communities.

The legacy of Dr. Sékétéli’s work will continue to inspire future generations in the global health community, as his contributions remain an enduring testament to his commitment to NTD elimination.
