The Expanded Special Project for the Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (ESPEN), hosted by WHO AFRO, convened a high-level strategic workshop with key partners from the Reaching the Last Mile Fund (RLMF), including the Gates Foundation, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and The END Fund. The meeting marked a pivotal moment in aligning efforts to eliminate NTDs and strengthen health systems across Africa.

With only five years remaining to achieve the WHO 2030 NTD Roadmap targets, the workshop focused on finalizing ESPEN’s 2026–2030 Strategic Framework. Discussions centered on strategic priorities, sustainability, and the urgent need to scale integrated, country-led approaches to ensure no one is left behind.

“People affected by NTDs often die in installments—through prolonged suffering, disability, and social exclusion,” emphasized Dr. Mohammed Janabi, WHO AFRO Regional Director. “NTDs contribute to mortality in ways that are invisible but devastating. We must act now to protect the progress made and reach those still unreached.”

Participants endorsed ESPEN’s role as a regional convener and technical enabler, recognizing its cost-effective support in data systems, supply chain management, and operational research. The workshop also highlighted the importance of integrating NTD services into primary health care and surveillance systems, embedding equity and gender inclusion, and leveraging digital tools for data-driven planning.

“We must ensure NTDs remain part of the conversation at the highest levels,” said Dr. Katey Owen, Director of NTDs at the Gates Foundation. “I am committed to sustaining strategic engagement and advocacy to keep NTDs visible and prioritized across global health platforms.”

Moving Forward

A joint action plan was initiated to expand ESPEN’s support to RLMF implementation across more countries and technical domains. Partners agreed to continue aligning efforts and mobilizing resources to support countries that may not reach elimination targets by 2030.

The workshop concluded with a shared vision for ESPEN’s long-term value proposition and a renewed commitment to collaboration, innovation, and integration—ensuring that the African region moves closer to eliminating NTDs and achieving universal health coverage.
