Historic Pledge of Over US$ 777 Million Marks a Turning Point in the Fight Against Neglected Tropical Diseases
Brazzaville, Republic of Congo - In a significant leap forward, global partners have pledged more than US$ 777 million in a collective commitment to intensify efforts to eliminate and eradicate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The landmark announcement was made during the 2023 Reaching the Last Mile Forum at COP28 in Dubai, with the United Arab Emirates, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and other key partners spearheading the commitment. Timely after the 2023 NTD Program Managers meeting, this financial infusion is set to propel progress towards the targets outlined in the World Health Organization 2030 roadmap on NTDs.
The commitment, especially crucial for sub-Saharan Africa, comes at a pivotal moment as the region aims to regain momentum in the fight against NTDs, overcoming setbacks caused by COVID-19 and the disproportionate impacts of climate change. The commitment underscores global dedication to overcoming challenges and fortifying ongoing efforts. Notably, the Africa region has achieved significant milestones, with 12 countries receiving WHO certification for eliminating at least one NTD, and Togo gaining global recognition as the first country certified for eliminating four NTDs.
