Global Progress and Collaborative Initiatives: Highlights from the 2023 NTD Program Managers Meeting

Brazzaville, Republic of Congo – The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa is reinforcing its commitment to combat neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by providing enhanced support to countries in the implementation of the 2021-2030 NTD roadmap.

The recently concluded 2023 NTD Program Managers Meeting served as a catalyst for scaling up country support in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Hosted by the WHO Regional Office for Africa, the meeting brought together experts, stakeholders, and countries to delve into critical aspects of NTD control and eradication.

  • Global Progress on NTD Roadmap Targets:

Commencing with a comprehensive overview, the meeting showcased global strides towards the targets outlined in the NTD Roadmap 2021-2030. Insights shared set the tone for collaborative efforts to address the burden of NTDs, impacting over 580 million people in the African Region.

  • Country Collaboration and Integration Showcased:

In-depth discussions addressed monitoring resources, funding gaps, and tools such as the ESPEN IU Planner, emphasizing the critical role of effective planning for program success. Compelling case studies from Rwanda, Ghana, and Mali on integration and collaboration were featured, ensuing panel discussions on progress, challenges, gaps, and potential solutions, fostering shared learning and a sense of global solidarity.

  • Partner Updates and Commitment to Results:

A dedicated partner panel provided detailed updates on the progress made in the NTD fight at country level, seamlessly transitioning into a comprehensive discussion of cross-cutting issues. Notably, the focus was on the ONE Health approach for NTDs, acknowledging the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. NTD Program Managers wholeheartedly committed to this holistic approach, fostering collaboration with stakeholders.

  • Integrated Surveillance, Monitoring, and Supply Chain Management:

Practical experiences were shared by countries and partners, highlighting the essential need for robust monitoring mechanisms to enhance the effectiveness of NTD programs. In a dedicated session on Supply Chain Management, country experiences from Kenya and Rwanda provided valuable insights into successful strategies, offering lessons applicable to other countries facing similar challenges.
